School Fishes (5+ years)

White Fish

  • Stage 1 Beginner level.
  • 30 minute classes.
  • Ratio of 4:1 children to teacher.

Skills

  1. Safety Slide in entry.
  2. Put face in water without goggles and open eyes.
  3. Breath control - Comfortable submerging with bubbles eyes down.
  4. Front star float for 5 seconds with eyes down and recover.
  5. Back star float for 5 seconds and recover.
  6. Sitting fall in entry and recover back to wall.
  7. Toes on edge jumping in and recover back to wall.
  8. Pick up object from bottom of pool.
  9. Streamline push and glide on front through hoop.
  10. Streamline push and glide on back through hoop.
  11. Horizontal rolling - assisted by teacher. Kicking on front, turn over and rest for 5 seconds and repeat 4 times. 
  12. Safety Questions
    1. Are you allowed to go to the water alone? Who do you go with?
    2. What is the signal for help? (Straight arm, closed fist, in air).
    3. What are the flag colours at the beach that you can swim between? (Red & yellow).
    4. What are 3 rules about being near the pool?
      1. No running.
      2. No jumping in.
      3. No pushing other people into the pool.

 

Yellow Fish

  • Stage 2 Beginner Level.
  • 30 minute classes.
  • Ratio of 4:1 children to teacher.

Skills

  1. Safety Slide in entry.
  2. Front float 10 seconds and recover.
  3. Back float 10-15 seconds and recover.
  4. Streamline push and glide on front for 3 metres.
  5. Streamline push and glide on back for 3 metres.
  6. Streamline flutter kick on front for 5 metres.
  7. Streamline flutter kick on back for 5 metres.
  8. Freestyle arms - 5 metres with good body position and strong flutter kick.
  9. Backstroke arms - with strong flutter kick 5m.
  10. Horizontal rolling - Kicking on front, turn over and rest for 5 seconds and repeat 4 times.
  11. Sculling - head first 4 metres
  12. Safety Questions

Green Fish

  • Advanced pre-school/Intermediate school level.
  • 30 minute classes.
  • Ratio of 4:1 children to teacher.

Skills

  1. Streamline with strong flutter kick eyes down 7 metres.
  2. Side breathing for freestyle - one hand holding board/aid with straight arm (other arm by side) and head movement only with strong flutter kick for 7 metres.
  3. Freestyle with breathing and strong flutter kick 7 metres.
    • Needs to be able to do 3 arm freestyle with breathing to the side.
  4. Back torpedo with flutter kick 7 metres.
  5. Backstroke with flutter kick 7 metres.
  6. Sculling on back head first 7 metres (SAFETY).
  7. Dolphin Kick 7 metres.
    • Needs to understand the dolphin kick movement in the water.
  8. Reach Rescue.
  9. Throw Rescue.
  10. Swim through submerged hoop and recover multiple objects from pool floor.
  11. Egg beater kick.
  12. Explain to teacher 3 rules for pool safety and 3 rules for beach safety must know signal for help.

When children progress from Green Fish, they will move onto Blue Fish.

Blue Fish

  • Advanced school.
  • 30 minute classes.
  • Ratio of 4:1 children to teacher.

Skills

  1. Freestyle 10 metres - correct breathing and timing.
  2. Backstroke 10 metres - correct timing.
  3. Sculling on back head first 10m (SAFETY).
  4. Sculling on back feet first 10m (SAFETY).
  5. Survival Backstroke Legs 10 metres (using correct Whip kick with 3 second glide finishing in streamline position).
  6. Survival Backstroke arms and legs 10 metres.
  7. Breaststroke legs 10 metres (using correct Whip kick ending in streamline glide).
  8. Breastroke arms with flutter kick 10 metres.
  9. Breastroke timing 10 metres.
  10. Rope throw rescue.
  11. Dolphin Kick - strong for 10 metres( do NOT introduce arms yet).
  12. Safety questions and exercise
    • Have general discussion about pool and beach safety.
    • Bring t-shirt and shorts to wear during lesson.

When children progress from Blue Fish, they will move onto Navy Blue Fish.

Navy Blue Fish

  • Advanced school.
  • 30 minute classes.
  • Ratio of 4:1 children to teacher.

Skills

  1. Freestyle 15 metres - correct breathing and timing.
  2. Backstroke 15 metres - correct timing.
  3. Sculling on back head first 15m (SAFETY).
  4. Sculling on back feet first 15m (SAFETY).
  5. Breaststroke swim 15 metres (correct timing and whip kick).
  6. Dolphin kick - strong for 15 metres (do not introduce arms until this is strong).
  7. Butterfly arms - underwater movement only with flutter kick for 4 arm movements.
  8. Butterfly arms - 4 full arm movements with flutter kick.
  9. Butttefly timing - 4 full cycles with correct timing of the kick (NO BREATHING YET).
  10. Butterfly breathing - breathing timing (every 2nd arm movement).
  11. Butterfly swim - 15 metres with correct breathing and timing of kick.
  12. Safety questions and exercise
    • Have general discussion about pool and beach safety.
    • Bring t-shirt and shorts to wear during lesson.

When children progress from Navy Blue Fish, they will move onto Purple Fish.
