Pre-school Fishes (3 – 6 years)

Red Fish

  • Beginner level.
  • 30 minute classes.
  • Ratio of 4:1 children to teacher.

Skills

  1. Slide in entry – independent.
  2. Put face in water without goggles and open eyes.
  3. Breathing control – Comfortable submerging with bubbles eyes down.
  4. Streamline push and glide – 2m with eyes down.
  5. Streamline torpedo – flutter kick for 3 m with eyes down.
  6. Back float 5 seconds and recover.
  7. Streamline on back – push and glide – 2m.
  8. Streamline kicking on back – 3 m with arms by side.
  9. Monkeys – climb along wall for 6 m and climb out of water independently.
  10. Horizontal rolling – assisted by teacher. Kicking on front, turn over and rest for 5 seconds and repeat 4 times.
  11. Entries and turns. Entry followed by turn around to wall and exit.
    1. A) Sitting entry.
    2. B) Standing entry, toes on edge.
  12. Safety Questions.
    • Are you allowed to go to the water alone? Who do you go with?
    • What are 3 rules about being near the pool?
      1. No running
      2. No jumping in
      3. No pushing other people in to the pool

When children progress from Red Fish, they move to Orange Fish.

Orange Fish

  • Intermediate pre-school level.
  • 30 minute classes.
  • Ratio of 4:1 children to teacher.

Skills

  1. Streamline push and glide for 3 meters with eyes down.
  2. Streamline flutter kick for 5 metres.
  3. Back float 10 seconds and recover.
  4. Streamline push and glide on back 3 m.
  5. Streamline flutter kick on back 5 meters.
  6. Freestyle arms – 5m with good body position and strong flutter kick.
  7. Backstroke arms – with strong flutter kick 5 m.
  8. Horizontal rolling – independent kicking on front, turn over and rest for 5 seconds and repeat 4 times.
  9. Jump in water, roll onto back 5 sends, recover and safe exit.
  10. Survival breaths – swim for 6 metres with minimum of 2 survival breaths.
  11. Sculling on back head first for 6 metres (proper sculling action).
