Purple Fish

  • 45 minute classes.
  • Ratio of 5:1 children to teacher.

Skills

  1. Freestyle 30 metres with correct technique.
  2. Freestyle tumble turn, push off & streamline.
    • Tumble turn, push off wall, do 2 butterfly kicks and 2 freestyle arms before surfacing.
  3. Backstroke 30 metres with correct technique.
  4. Backstroke tumble turn, push off & streamline.
    • Tumble turn, push off wall, do 2 butterfly kicks before surfacing.
  5. Breaststroke 30 metres correct breathing and timing.
  6. Breaststroke and Butterfly turn (2 hands on wall) & streamline.
    • 2 hands on the wall, turn and push off.
  7. Survival Backstroke legs and arms with glide 30 metres (SAFETY).
  8. Butterfly - 30 metres good timing and co-ordination.
  9. Side stroke 15m (SAFETY).
  10. Medley 60m - 1 lap of each stroke with correct turns.
  11. Diving progresion - lock hands, lock head, steer up.
    • Done in the water there is to be NO diving from edge.
    • Lock hands over head, dive over noodle, through a hoop under the water and up to the surface.
  12. Safety questions and exercise
    • Have general discussion about pool and beach safety.
    • Bring t-shirt and shorts to wear during lesson.

When children progress from Purple Fish, they will move onto Rainbow Fish.

Rainbow Fish

  • 1 hour class.
  • Ratio of 6:1 children to teacher.
  • Class works on stroke technique and personal bests (PB).

Recorded time trials:

  1. Freestyle 15 metres.
  2. Freestyle 30 metres.
  3. Backstroke 15 metres.
  4. Backstroke 30 metres.
  5. Breaststroke 15 metres.
  6. Breaststroke 30 metres.
  7. Butterfly 15 metres.
  8. Butterfly 30 metres.
  9. IM 60 metres (1 lap of each stroke).
  10. IM 120 metres (2 laps of each stroke).

Safety exercise:

Bring heavy tracksuit to wear during the lesson

Skills are not assessed in this class, as this is the last level in our program. Instead, this level works towards gaining Personal Bests, working on stroke technique and building stamina.

Instead of a list of skills, there will be a sheet of water proof paper that each child’s PB’s will be recorded onto. The teacher must always carry a stop watch (provided) and can record the swimming time for each stroke. This way, the child can see how they have progressed in this level with their times.
